Maritime Accident: Chemical Fire on "X-Press Pearl" Under Control Off Colombo

The Navy said the ship is carrying 1,486 containers, including 25 tons of Nitric Acid and other chemicals which it had loaded at the port of Hazira, India on May 15. Preliminary investigations indicate the fire started due to a chemical reaction of the hazardous cargo.

The fire broke out on the afternoon of May 20, 9.5 nautical miles northwest of the port of Colombo.

Details of the accident

As reported that smoke was spewing from a container filled with chemicals at first.The smoke then escalated into a fire, possibly due to rain mixing with burning chemicals.

The Sri Lankan navy deployed two offshore patrol boats (USS Sagara and USS Sindurala), a fast attack boat and a Sri Lankan fire tug to put out the fire and bring it under control.

The Sri Lankan Navy said: "A special team from the Srikaran Navy and the Port Authority (SLPA) boarded the ship on the evening of the 20th to conduct an inspection.They suspect the fire was caused by a chemical reaction with chemicals being transported on board."

On May 25, a container ship, the X-Press Pearl, caught fire and exploded. The fire was fueled by a chemical leak from the ship.

Container Condition

The ship was carrying about 1,486 containers, at least eight of which went into the water, including containers carrying nitric acid, other chemicals and items such as cosmetics.

Data show that container ship "X-Press Pearl" cabin sharing companies include MCC,PIL,Maersk, Seago Sealand, etc.

Information of X-press ship

The container ship, operated by Singapore-based X-Press Feeders, has a crew of 25 from China, the Philippines, India and Russia.
X-Press Pearl is the second 2,700TEU container ship built by Zhoushan Changhong International for the X-Press Feeders' Sea Consortium. It is 186 meters long, 34.8 meters wide and 17.9 meters deep. It is classified into DNV.

It was just completed and delivered in February 2021.
